Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned local government chairpersons across Nigeria to uphold accountability and manage public funds prudently.
Olukoyede stressed that LG chairmen are not immune from investigation or prosecution and that the EFCC will not wait for their tenure to end before taking action.
This warning was conveyed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity.
“Local government chairmen do not have immunity, and we are not going to wait until you finish your tenure to come after you. The impact of these resources is not felt by the people living in these areas. Instead of serving as catalysts for growth, councils have become mere caricatures that exist only in name,” Olukoyede stated.
The EFCC Chairman also revealed that the Commission’s newly established Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) Department would dispatch officers to local councils in Gombe State to monitor the use of allocations from the Federation Account.
“The EFCC will be paying you visits occasionally to check how you are using the funds. We will come in the evening. Sometimes, you may even see us in your dreams,” he warned.
