There has been a misleading narrative circulating on social media, claiming that Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has removed all District Heads and titleholders. However, the Governor has clarified that his directive only requires District Heads who hold traditional titles from their previous traditional councils to relinquish those titles and pledge loyalty to their new Chiefs and Emirs.
A press statement signed by Humwashi Wonosikou, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, on Wednesday, emphasized that the directive applies solely to those with titles linked to their former councils. According to the statement, the move is part of the Governor's broader efforts to foster harmony and unity among traditional institutions in the state.
With the creation of new Chiefdoms and Emirates, District Heads with titles from their previous councils are expected to obtain new titles from the rightful custodians of their culture, ensuring alignment with their cultural traditions and heritage.
Additionally, Emirs and Chiefs of newly established traditional councils who wish to confer traditional titles on their District Heads are required to seek the necessary approvals.
The statement also expressed concern over the use of artificial intelligence by some individuals to distort the Governor’s remarks, thereby spreading misinformation and attempting to tarnish the image of the Governor and his administration.
Governor Fintiri reaffirmed that his policy is designed to promote cultural preservation, unity, and progress in Adamawa State.
The Governor’s exact words:
“As a policy, I call on all the District Heads concerned to transfer their loyalty, rights, and privileges to the new Emirates and Chiefdoms. Hence, traditional titles acquired from their old Emirates and Chiefdoms are to be dropped.
The constituted traditional councils of the new Emirates and Chiefdoms are, therefore, directed to recommend new titles for the District Heads for approval, in line with the statutory dictates of the tradition.”
