The Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, on Wednesday, led the National Steering Committee on the Implementation of the Strategic Plan on Leather and Leather Products Policy to a high-level meeting with the Minister of State for Industry, Senator John Owan Enoh.

The meeting, held at the minister’s office in Abuja, focused on strengthening collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s leather value chain, according to a statement signed by Nuhu Basheer Masa, Personal Assistant on Media and Communication to the DG.

Dr. Imam, who also chairs the National Steering Committee, emphasized the critical role of the leather industry in Nigeria’s economic transformation. “The Leather Policy Implementation Plan is positioned to drive economic diversification by reducing dependence on oil revenues, promoting the export of high-quality leather products to boost foreign exchange earnings, generating employment opportunities across the entire value chain, and empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to ensure inclusive growth,” he stated.

In his remarks, Senator Enoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the leather sector’s development. “The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment remains committed to supporting the committee’s objectives and ensuring the active participation of affiliated agencies in implementing policies that will unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s leather sector,” he said.

The meeting reinforced the government’s resolve to harness the leather industry’s economic potential, positioning it as a key driver of Nigeria’s non-oil export sector.
