The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has officially unveiled the timetable for the forthcoming local government elections, reaffirming its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible polls.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting held at the NSIEC headquarters in Minna, the commission’s chairman, Engineer Mohammed Jibrin Iman, assured political parties and the public that the electoral process will adhere to the highest standards of transparency, using the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter register to enhance credibility.
Engineer Iman urged all political parties to strictly comply with electoral guidelines and regulations, stressing that adherence is vital for a smooth and credible process.
He further announced that NSIEC has established a comprehensive monitoring system, with electoral officers stationed across all 25 local government areas, to supervise party primaries and ensure compliance with the rules.
According to the timetable, preparations for the elections will officially commence on March 6, 2025, while the elections themselves will be held on November 1, 2025, covering both councillorship and chairmanship positions.
Party primaries will take place between March 15 and March 24, 2025, while public campaigns by political parties will kick off on May 27, 2025.
The NSIEC chairman emphasized the importance of maintaining peace throughout the process, urging politicians, aspirants, voters, and all stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly and in line with established regulations to avoid conflict.
Following a detailed review of the proposed timetable, stakeholders present at the meeting unanimously endorsed and formally adopted it through a motion.
