Bokkos Killings Should End, by Godspower Shedrack Ibrahim

Plateau state Governor

Plateau, known as the Home of Peace and Tourism, has been suffering from insecurity and repeated ambushes by herdsmen.

Following the recent killings by unknown gunmen who invaded Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, the tragic incident has captured a lot of attention and made residents question whether there is truly any security in the area.

The Bokkos attacks and killings have become recurring incidents that have led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties. These tragedies have left the people of Bokkos in tears and fear.

In a statement by the Commissioner of Information, Joyce Ramnap, the Governor assured citizens that his administration would get to the root of these calamities.
However, residents remain worried that if the unrest continues, their lives and properties will remain at high risk. Plateau State had been enjoying months of relative peace before this recent attack.

Yakubu Dati, former Commissioner for Information in Plateau State, also expressed his condolences to the people of Bokkos during an interview.
Even though security agencies are doing their best to restore peace in Bokkos and across Plateau, the major concern for most citizens is the way forward.

In my opinion, the people of Bokkos deserve justice at all costs and should enjoy security for their lives and properties. From December 2023 to February 2024, over 1,300 innocent people have lost their lives during these attacks.

One of the causes of these attacks in villages such as Ruwi, Mangor, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai in Bokkos LGA is that herdsmen are allegedly trying to forcefully take over the land, threatening to continue attacks if they are not allowed to do so.

I am calling on the government to deploy a stronger security presence to protect the lives of people in Bokkos. Many promises have been made in the past, yet these ambushes have not reduced. They only pause briefly and then resume at an alarming rate. Over 45 lives were lost in the most recent attack—this is not a good record for the state or its leadership.

Some ways these killings can be addressed include, first, creating more security checkpoints at the boundaries and entrances of the villages and the local government at large. Another solution is to recruit more local vigilante security personnel, equip them with effective ammunition, and properly orient them on the responsibilities of their duties.

The government of Plateau State must rise to the challenge of ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
