Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd) has been released after enduring 56 days in captivity.
The former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was abducted from his hometown in Bakori Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State on February 5, 2025, along with nine other residents, as previously reported by Daily Trust.
Despite his family's payment of a ransom, Tsiga remained in captivity for several more weeks. There were conflicting reports regarding the ransom amount. While some sources suggested N60 million was paid, Daily Trust learned from a reliable source that the actual sum was three times that amount.
A close family member disclosed that after the ransom was delivered, the kidnappers remained silent for a week before reaching out to the family. During this call, they allowed the general to speak with his relatives.
“The money was handed over to them, and it was only a week later, on Tuesday, March 11, that they called and let us hear his voice,” the source said.
The abductors later attempted to demand additional money, but the family did not comply.
“Nothing extra was paid, and as of now, they are in Zamfara State, from where the general will be transported to Abuja,” the source added.
A senior military official confirmed Tsiga’s release to Daily Trust, while sources close to his family stated that he is in good health.
