The coffin of Pope Francis was taken to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome by pallbearers on Saturda where he was laid to rest following an emotional funeral ceremony at St. Peter’s Square.
After the funeral Mass, the late pontiff’s coffin was placed onto a white popemobile, which departed from the Vatican as tens of thousands of mourners lined the streets to pay their final respects.
Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday at 88, was honoured by a massive crowd, reflecting his lasting impact as a champion of the poor and the first Latin American pope in the Catholic Church’s history.
Earlier in the day, St. Peter’s Square had overflowed with mourners, dignitaries, and clergy from around the world, gathered to bid farewell to the beloved leader whose humility and advocacy for the marginalized left an indelible mark on the global Church.
