The Wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, has called on stakeholders to intensify efforts in sensitizing communities about the importance of the measles-rubella vaccine to safeguard children's health across the state.

Hajiya Huriyya made the call while flagging off the Measles-Rubella Sensitization Campaign in Gusau on Friday, emphasizing that the health and well-being of children in Zamfara remain her top priority.

She explained that the first phase of the vaccination campaign would target children aged between 9 months and 15 years, while subsequent immunization efforts would focus on those aged 9 months to 5 years.

The First Lady expressed her gratitude to development partners for their support in addressing the state's health challenges.

Also speaking, Governor Dauda Lawal urged traditional rulers and other key stakeholders to collaborate and ensure that children within their domains receive the measles-rubella vaccine, thereby protecting them from life-threatening childhood diseases.

In his remarks, Dr. Ibrahim Hano, a Pediatric Consultant at the Federal Medical Center, Gusau, described measles and rubella as deadly diseases among children.

Dr. Hano noted that if not properly addressed through vaccination, these diseases could lead to blindness, glaucoma, brain disorders, and heart diseases.

He stressed that effective public sensitization, training of healthcare personnel, educating parents during clinical visits, and ensuring proper nutrition for children are critical strategies for combating the diseases.

Similarly, the Emir of Anka and Chairman of the Zamfara Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmad, lauded the state government and its development partners for their commitment to improving healthcare delivery.

He pledged the full support of the traditional institutions in promoting awareness and encouraging parents to vaccinate their children against these deadly diseases.
