A group of concerned citizens has issued a formal response defending the appointment of Aliyu Tajudeen as the Managing Director of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, following criticisms from the Northern Youth Political Thinkers (NYPT).

In their joint statement released on Wednesday, Mal. Isah Nuhu and Aminu Muhammad Abdullahi affirmed that Tajudeen’s appointment was grounded in merit, competence, and the strategic development needs of the Authority—dismissing claims of nepotism as “unfounded and unfair.”

“The appointment process was conducted with the highest regard for merit and transparency,” the statement read. “Aliyu Tajudeen’s qualifications, experience, and vision for development made him the right choice.”

The statement further clarified that while Tajudeen is related to Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Speaker had no role in the appointment process.

“The Speaker does not appoint heads of parastatals. Any suggestion otherwise is an attempt to politicize a merit-based decision and tarnish the image of a public office,” the group asserted.

The citizens also acknowledged the nomination of Hon. Shuaibu Bawa Jaja by the Kaduna State Government, commending his grassroots efforts but maintaining that federal appointments must align with broader national development priorities.

“Final decisions on such appointments rest with the Federal Government, which considers technical expertise and leadership alignment with national goals,” the statement emphasised.

The group called on NYPT and other stakeholders to shift from divisive rhetoric and instead embrace constructive democratic engagement.

“We must unite to build institutions and promote governance that delivers results. Collaboration, not confrontation, is the way forward,” the statement urged.

Expressing full confidence in the new appointee, the group stated that Aliyu Tajudeen’s leadership is expected to bring transformative progress to the Authority, benefiting both the region and the nation.

“We welcome any transparent review processes, but such must be based on facts and due process—not conjecture or political pressure.”

The statement concluded by reaffirming support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of appointing competent individuals who are committed to national service and accountability.
