Former President Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned against moves to establish a one-party system in Nigeria, describing such efforts as potentially harmful to the nation's democratic future.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a memorial lecture and tribute in honour of the late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, Jonathan emphasized that any country considering a one-party model must do so with strategic planning, clear objectives, and the national interest at heart.

He warned that attempts to impose a one-party structure through political manipulation to serve personal interests could have dangerous consequences for Nigeria’s unity and progress.

The former president also urged the Clark family to institute an annual memorial lecture in honour of the late nationalist. He said such a platform would help sustain Clark’s legacy and advocacy for a united, just, and prosperous Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed concern that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding heroes were being eroded. He decried the worsening poverty, insecurity, and skyrocketing cost of living, stating that the vision and values leaders like Pa Edwin Clark stood for had not been realised.

In his remarks, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the occasion, stressed the importance of national unity. He noted that for Nigeria to achieve meaningful progress, leaders must prioritise the national interest over personal ambitions.

The event drew prominent Nigerians who gathered to honour the life and legacy of the late Chief Edwin Clark, celebrating his contributions to nation-building and democratic ideals.
