The Kano State Government has announced an immediate ban on all live political programmes aired by media outlets across the state, citing the need to preserve cultural and religious harmony.

The decision was disclosed during a quarterly stakeholders’ meeting held at the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs. The session, chaired by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, included top media executives and government officials.

In a statement issued by Sani Abba Yola, Director of Special Duties at the ministry, the government said the move is intended “to prevent the spread of inflammatory content” that could threaten peaceful coexistence.

Comrade Waiya emphasized that the policy is not aimed at stifling opposition voices, but rather to “safeguard the sanctity of Kano’s cultural and religious values.”

As part of new media regulations, individuals appearing on political programmes must now sign an undertaking pledging to avoid abusive, defamatory, or culturally insensitive remarks. Presenters have also been instructed to refrain from provocative questions and conduct that may provoke controversial or harmful statements.

Waiya noted a decline in the use of abusive language in recent broadcasts, attributing the improvement to consistent engagement between the ministry and media organizations.

He also revealed that the government has launched a sensitization campaign targeting political broadcasters, analysts, and members of the Council of Friday Imams, to promote responsible communication.

“We want to ensure that public discourse remains constructive, respectful, and free of defamation or any act capable of tarnishing the image of our state,” Waiya said.
