The Labour Party has suspended six prominent members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and Senators Ireti Kingibe and Darlington Nwokocha, over alleged anti-party activities.
Others affected by the suspension are Victor Afam Ogene, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi.
According to a statement released by the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, on Wednesday, May 7, the suspension follows recommendations by a five-member Disciplinary Committee established on May 2, 2025, to investigate allegations of anti-party conduct.
"Recall that last Friday, May 2, 2025, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party set up a five-man Disciplinary Committee headed by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, and three others to investigate Governor Alex Otti and other members accused of anti-party activities," the statement read.
"The committee has concluded its assignment and submitted its report. The National Executive Committee met today, May 7, and after extensive deliberation, ratified the recommendations.
"Consequently, the following individuals are suspended indefinitely and with immediate effect: Dr. Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi.
"These individuals are no longer authorized to act on behalf of the Labour Party. Relevant institutions including the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, National Assembly, INEC, and security agencies have been notified."
The statement also addressed reports concerning Nenadi Usman, clarifying that she is not a member of the Labour Party and therefore not subject to party disciplinary actions.
“She is a member of the Obidient Support Group and has never been a card-carrying member of the Labour Party,” the statement said. “Recently, she pledged allegiance to another political party alongside a former Kaduna State governor. Her loyalty is unclear, and she has no standing within the LP.”
The party further criticized Usman over alleged corruption, referencing her legal battles with the EFCC and questioning her moral authority to critique the Labour Party’s leadership.
On the party's financial status, the statement emphasized transparency, stating that the Labour Party’s audited accounts have been published and received commendation from INEC's external auditors.
Lastly, the Labour Party reiterated its stance against any proposed political coalition or merger.
“We are not in talks with any group or individuals regarding a coalition or merger. Those pushing such agendas lack the competence to manage even a single party, let alone a coalition,” the statement concluded. “The Labour Party will contest the 2027 general election as a stand-alone party.”
