The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Zaria, on Friday, held a colourful matriculation ceremony for new students admitted for the 2024–2025 academic session, marking the first such event under the leadership of the Institute’s new Director-General, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam.

The event, which took place at the Institute’s campus, was graced by several dignitaries, including the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, and other ministers, traditional rulers, and representatives of sister institutions.

In his address, Dr. Imam warmly welcomed the students and expressed joy at presiding over the ceremony for the first time since assuming office on October 31, 2024.

“This Matriculation Ceremony is symbolic and historical being the first since my assumption of office... You are therefore special in many ways to me as we journey through in the next two or four years of your programme,” he said.

The Director-General charged the new students to take full advantage of the opportunities available at the Institute, known for its niche in leather and allied technologies.

“As you begin your academic journey, I want to assure you that we are committed to providing a supportive and stimulating environment that fosters growth, innovation, and excellence,” he stated. “Our vision is to be a leading center of learning, innovation, scientific research, and technology, producing graduates who are equipped to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.”

He further urged the students to maintain academic integrity and stay away from cultism, drug abuse, and other vices that could derail their future.

“I will advise you to shun all forms of examination malpractices so that your efforts at pursuing your dream career will not be in vain,” he cautioned, while encouraging the students to “maintain a good balance between your academic work, extra-curricular activities, social media, and social engagements on campus.”

Dr. Imam emphasised the national importance of the Institute, noting its unique mandate to develop human capital in leather and related industries.

“NILEST is the only tertiary institution in Nigeria charged by the Federal Government with this great responsibility... The Institute has been carrying out this mandate since its establishment in 1964,” he remarked.

Highlighting a major development, the DG announced that NILEST is set to commence degree programmes following the enactment of the NILEST Act 2023.

“My administration is working hard to actualise the provision of the NILEST Act on mounting degree programmes such as Leather Engineering, Polymer Science Technology, Bio-Technology, Industrial Chemistry, Science Laboratory Technology, Computer Engineering, Footwear Technology, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Welding and Fabrication, to mention but a few,” he revealed.

He disclosed that efforts were ongoing to affiliate with reputable universities both in Nigeria and abroad to kick-start the new programmes.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Imam congratulated the students and expressed confidence in their potential.

“I congratulate the matriculating students... I am excited to work with you, and I look forward to seeing the impact you will make in our institution and beyond. Congratulations, and may Allah bless you,” he said.

The event ended on a high note with cheers from parents, staff, and students as the academic community celebrated the start of a new chapter.
