Silent Battles in a Broken Economy: Why Kindness Matters Now More Than Ever, by Ammar M. Rajab

Nigerians are facing incredibly hard times as inflation continues to hit unbearably hard. While there have been slight reductions in food prices, the struggle to earn money is so intense that these price drops feel almost meaningless. The economy is biting down hardest on the downtrodden—those who cry out daily for help and support.

Governments at the local, state, and national levels have tried to ease the pain through palliatives. Just recently in my community, people began receiving N75,000 through the RRR initiative. And yes, it does make a difference. I’ve seen the joy, especially among women, who are celebrating this relief. Some have used the money to start small businesses and rebuild hope from the ground up.

But the reality remains: the majority are still struggling, still crying, still stuck in the grip of a merciless economy.

To be precise, many are going through hell in silence. They stay quiet, do their best, and pray with all their hearts. Small and medium-sized businesses are collapsing. Those who once had capital and security are now barely getting by, living hand to mouth.

If you’re fortunate enough to have something—no matter how little—make it a habit to check in on your loved ones, relatives, and friends. Some people will never ask for help. Not because they don’t need it, but because they’ve trained themselves to be content. Others keep quiet because they’re afraid of being disappointed… again.

The stories out there are truly heartbreaking. Genuine struggles—business losses, failing health, overwhelming debts, and painful predicaments—are more common than many realize. These situations deserve our attention. They deserve our kindness. They deserve a helping hand.

Never think that giving will diminish you. It won’t. Giving doesn’t hinder your progress—it enriches your soul. That’s a truth worth holding onto.

And to those who are constantly in need of help: please understand—no one owes you anything, not even your parents at this stage in life. Let that truth bring you peace, especially when the help you hoped for doesn’t come. Pick yourself up. Work hard. Trust in your journey, and keep moving forward.

May Almighty Allah enrich us all and grant us the strength, wisdom, and compassion to support one another through these difficult times.
