Zamfara Factional Assembly Dissolves Committees, Alleges Financial Misappropriation

The factional Zamfara State House of Assembly has dissolved all principal officers and standing committees, accusing them of financial misappropriation and mismanagement of public funds.

This was disclosed by the factional Speaker, Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi, shortly after a plenary session held in Gusau, the state capital.

Gummi announced the immediate reconstitution of two critical committees: Ethics and Privileges, and Works and Infrastructure. Hon. Masama and Hon. Bashir Sarkin Zango have been appointed as chairmen of the respective committees.

According to the Speaker, the House resolved to forward reports of financial impropriety by the dissolved leadership to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for investigation and possible recovery of diverted funds.

Under matters of urgent public importance, the lawmakers criticized what they described as lopsided appointments of Permanent Secretaries by the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal.

Raising the motion, Hon. Ibrahim Tudu Tukur, representing Bakura Constituency, drew attention to the exclusion of several local government areas in the recent appointments. He cited Tsafe, Maradun, and Birnin Magaji as examples of LGAs without any appointments, while others allegedly had over nine representatives.

Tukur described the imbalance as a violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and called for an immediate review based on principles of equity and fairness.

In response, the House directed Governor Dauda Lawal to reverse the appointments and ensure fair representation across all local government areas in the state.

The Assembly also expressed concern over the slow pace of the multi-billion naira Gusau-Dansadau road project. Lawmakers noted that despite substantial funds disbursed to contractors since last year, only five kilometers of work has been completed.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure has been summoned to appear before the House to explain the delay. Legislators emphasized the need for accountability and proper use of public funds.

Furthermore, the House urged the state government to reopen at least two boarding schools in each of the three senatorial districts that were shut down due to insecurity. The lawmakers accused the government of using security concerns as an excuse to avoid implementing the school feeding program, which had benefited underprivileged students and improved school retention.

It would be recalled that a parallel House of Assembly, led by Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi, emerged last Wednesday. The group has since taken a confrontational stance against both the executive arm and the faction loyal to Speaker Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki. So far, neither the state government nor the Moriki-led Assembly has provided a clear response to the unfolding political situation.
