The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, has called on academic institutions across the country to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a transformative tool in education, particularly in the STEM fields.
Dr. Imam made the call while speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the maiden International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, organized by the School of Sciences, Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria. The three-day event, held at the university’s ICT Centre, was themed "Utilization of Artificial Intelligence for Academic Excellence: Transforming STEM Teaching, Learning & Research."
Addressing participants at the conference, Dr. Imam underscored the strategic importance of integrating AI into academic curricula, research, and instructional methods.
> “AI is revolutionizing the global educational landscape, offering possibilities such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, data-driven research, and automation of complex academic processes,” he said. “In the context of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), AI has become indispensable in solving real-world problems and expanding the frontiers of knowledge.”
He described the conference as a unique platform for innovation, collaboration, and thought leadership, especially in aligning Nigerian education with global technological trends.
Also present at the event was the Acting Vice Chancellor of FUE Zaria, Dr. Suleiman Balarabe, who served as the Chief Host, as well as Professor Sharafuddeen from the University of Malaysia, who delivered the keynote address. Other dignitaries included Associate Professor Ify Marisa of the Department of Mathematics, Maylan University, USA; the Rector of Aviation, Dr. Samaila Danjuma, represented by Dr. John Ali (Deputy Rector, Admin); and a representative of the Director General of the National Research Institute for Chemical Technology (NARICT), among others.
Dr. Imam commended the organizers for their foresight in convening the conference, urging participants to explore AI's full potential to enhance academic productivity and institutional development.
The conference marks a significant step in advancing Nigeria's readiness for the AI-driven future in education and research.
