The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Zaria, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, has sought the collaboration of the Edo State Government in boosting leather training and infrastructure development across the state.

Dr. Imam made the appeal on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at the Government House in Benin. The visit, according to a press statement signed and released by Nuhu Basheer Masa, Personal Assistant on Media and Communication to the DG, was part of efforts to expand partnerships for youth empowerment through leather technology.

The statement noted that the DG was accompanied by members of his entourage and was received by top government officials including the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), and the Chief of Staff.

During the meeting, Dr. Imam emphasized the need to develop leather sector infrastructure and called on the state to support the training of youths in leather and leather products manufacturing, describing it as a tool for job creation and economic transformation.

Before the meeting with the governor, Dr. Imam had visited the NILEST South-South Regional Centre in Afuze, Owan East Local Government Area, to inspect training facilities and ongoing activities at the institute's regional base.

In his response, Governor Okpebholo welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to vocational training and skills acquisition, particularly for youths and women. He pledged to sponsor hundreds of Edo youths for leather training programs at NILEST.

The governor also expressed gratitude to the NILEST leadership for establishing the regional centre in Edo State, saying the move would support the state's broader development goals.
