Introduction
The event of Ghadir Khumm stands as a crucial turning point in the
history of Islam, whose meaning, far beyond a mere religious or historical
incident, holds the potential to enlighten ethical leadership and foster unity
between religions in the modern world. The visionary lessons embodied in Ghadir
can nurture stronger human bonds and peaceful coexistence among followers of
all Divine faiths.
The Truth of the Ghadir Event: A Shared Narrative
The Ghadir narrative is presented in both Sunni and Shia sources.
According to reliable historical records, the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon
him and his progeny), returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, called upon the
Muslims at a place called Ghadir Khumm. He
raised the hand of his cousin and son-in-law, Imam Ali (peace be upon
him), and proclaimed:
"Man kuntu mawlahu fa
hādhā Alīyun mawlahu, Allāhumma wāli man wālāhu wa ‘ādi man
‘ādāhu..."
"Whoever I am his
master, this Ali is his master. O Allah! Befriend whoever befriends him, and be
the enemy of whoever is hostile to him."
This hadith is recorded in sources such as Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal
(no. 22995), Sunan Ibn Majah (Vol. 1, p. 43), and Tarikh al-Tabari (Vol. 3, p.
605). The Prophet (pbuh) likened Ali’s position to that of Aaron (Harun) to
Moses (Musa): “You are to me as Harun was to Musa.”
Such statements carry a deep message about the continuation of
prophetic mission and divine unity, transcending time and boundaries.
Ghadir: A Message Beyond Differences
Ghadir is not merely a message for the Muslim community; it transcends sectarian boundaries and calls for ethics, justice, and compassion. Imam Ali (pbuh) represents a model of ethical leadership whose teachings—like those of Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them)—emphasise justice, forgiveness, responsibility, and love for all people. The message of “man kuntu mawlahu...” is a reminder that merit, the observance of rights, and respect for human dignity are values far above race, religion, or language.
Ghadir: A Bridge for Unity and Coexistence of Religions
Ghadir proposes a concept of leadership rooted in God-centeredness, loyalty to truth, empathy, and service to humanity. This model can serve as a bridge for interfaith and intercultural dialogue. The core message of Ghadir—love, support for the oppressed, and coexistence—finds harmony with the teachings of earlier prophets such as Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them), who also called humanity to peace, kindness, and upholding the truth. Promoting dialogue and cooperation among the followers of divine religions in combating extremism, violence, and injustice is one of the key strategies inspired by Ghadir in today’s world.
The Impact of Ghadir on Islamic and Human Civilisation
The teachings of Ghadir throughout history have inspired not only Islamic civilisation but also shaped concepts of ethical, people-centred leadership. Many reformers and thinkers worldwide, drawing inspiration from the character of Ali (pbuh), have viewed dignity, fairness, and devotion to truth as interfaith and universal values. The Ghadir message underlines that the realisation of justice and excellence is the shared goal of all prophets and true leaders of mankind.
Ghadir, Our Guide Today: Beyond Borders and Religions
In today’s world, where identity crises, sectarianism, and religious
violence threaten humanity, returning to the common teachings of the prophets,
especially ethical and just leadership in the style of Ali (pbuh), represents a
path toward solidarity and human dignity. Promoting interfaith dialogue, joint
social cooperation, a commitment to human rights, and adopting leadership
inspired by the morality of the prophets can open new horizons for peaceful
coexistence in the twenty-first century.
This timeless message, rising above religious differences, calls
all people toward a society filled with kindness, respect, and truth.
