The Kebbi State Government has commenced the clearance and evacuation of drainages in flood-prone areas as part of proactive measures to avert flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

The Commissioner for Urban Development, Hon. Hayatu Bawa, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

Bawa expressed satisfaction with the support received from Governor Nasir Idris, commending him for granting prompt approval and providing the necessary financial and logistical backing for the exercise.

"We have already begun clearing drainages to ensure the free flow of water during the rainy season. This is aimed at preventing water overflow, which often leads to flooding," Bawa stated.

He added that the evacuation exercise is focused on removing debris and waste that obstruct water channels, thereby improving drainage efficiency and reducing the risk of flood-related disasters.

“Government is doing everything possible to minimise the devastating effects of flooding,” the commissioner added.

Bawa cautioned residents against building on water channels and urged the public to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which contributes to blocked drainages and increased flood risk.

He further advised residents in flood-prone areas to consider relocating to higher ground to safeguard lives and property.

“Clearing drainages remains one of the most effective ways to prevent water overflow into people’s homes,” he said.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safer environment and appealed for public cooperation in sustaining flood prevention efforts.
