Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has identified the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project as a key development partner in the fight against environmental challenges in the state.
The Governor made this known while receiving the ACReSAL Implementation Support Mission team on a sympathy visit at his official residence in the Government House, Minna.
Describing ACReSAL as a “wonderful initiative” of the World Bank, Governor Bago noted that the project has significantly supported Niger State in various sectors. He called for stronger collaboration, particularly in critical areas such as water treatment and transportation.
“ACReSAL has been instrumental in supporting us, but there is still much to be done. We seek even greater partnership to overcome our environmental and infrastructure-related challenges,” he stated.
Governor Bago thanked the team for their visit and revealed that the state government is currently working with the National Bureau of Statistics to determine the number of people who lost their lives in the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area. He added that the government is intensifying advocacy campaigns to relocate residents from flood-prone zones.
He also reiterated his administration's commitment to engaging citizens in agricultural initiatives as a means of eradicating poverty and fostering self-reliance.
Speaking earlier, the Task Team Leader of the Implementation Support Mission, Dr. Joy Agene, said the visit was to commiserate with the state government over the Mokwa flood tragedy and to assess the progress of ACReSAL’s projects in the state.
Dr. Agene commended Niger State for its commitment and proactive stance in addressing environmental issues, describing it as a “formidable partner” in sustainable development efforts.
“Niger State has demonstrated strong ownership and support for ACReSAL’s interventions. We are encouraged by the state’s leadership and look forward to even deeper collaboration,” she added.
