The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has said the institution has achieved its long-standing dream of becoming a truly postgraduate university, following a comprehensive review of all its postgraduate programmes to make them more relevant and responsive to contemporary societal needs.
Speaking at the matriculation ceremony for newly admitted postgraduate students, Prof. Ahmed also announced that earlier this year, the university renamed its School of Postgraduate Studies as the Postgraduate College to reflect this renewed focus.
“With the largest number of postgraduate programmes, totalling 529, and a postgraduate student population exceeding 7,000, the university administration fully recognises this significant transformation,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
Prof. Ahmed assured both fresh and returning postgraduate students that concrete measures had been put in place to ensure they graduate within the stipulated period of their studies.
“University education is an exciting experience, but it also comes with a high level of social responsibility. Your main objective is to acquire knowledge and skills that will prepare you for a productive life,” he said.
He further advised the students to contribute to maintaining a peaceful and conducive environment, which he described as crucial for academic success and personal development.
“Fulfilling these noble objectives requires peace, stability, and a supportive learning atmosphere. A key challenge for you is to help uphold these values throughout your stay in the university,” he added.
Prof. Ahmed also revealed that ABU is strengthening partnerships and collaborations with various organisations to ensure that the Postgraduate College offers student-centred, responsive, and entrepreneurship-oriented programmes tailored to societal and industrial demands.
He congratulated the fresh students on their successful admission, noting they were among the few selected from the large number of applicants.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of the Postgraduate College, Prof. Mohammed Nasir Shuaibu, disclosed that the university received 6,953 applications for the 2024/2025 academic session. Out of these, 5,384 candidates met the rigorous admission requirements and were offered admission.
According to him, 3,587 students have already completed screening, with over 95 percent finalising their registration.
The breakdown includes:
-
725 PhD students
-
57 MPhil students
-
2,558 Master’s Degree students
-
371 postgraduate diploma students
Prof. Shuaibu urged the students to take full advantage of the opportunity, work hard, and comply with university regulations to complete their studies on time.
Other speakers at the event included the Dean of Students, Prof. Sahalu B. Junaidu, who briefed students on accommodation and welfare services managed by the Student Affairs Division.
Also addressing the students were the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila; Acting Chief Security Officer, Malam Ashiru T. Zango; and Director of University Health Services, Prof. M.M. Dauda, who respectively spoke on academic regulations, security matters, and healthcare services.
