As part of activities marking its 2025 Press Week, the Abuja Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja, organized a free medical outreach for journalists on Saturday, promoting the health and well-being of media professionals.

Hundreds of journalists turned out for the program, undergoing health screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes, hepatitis, oral care, and general medical consultations.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Abuja NUJ Council, Comrade Grace Ike, emphasized the importance of regular health checks for journalists, describing the outreach as a vital step towards ensuring media professionals remain healthy and active in their critical roles.

“Our work as journalists is time-consuming and mentally demanding. This medical outreach allows our members to take time out to check their health status and stay fit for the national assignment,” Ike stated.

She commended the turnout of members and urged them to fully cooperate with healthcare providers to maximize the benefits of the initiative. The NUJ Chairperson also expressed appreciation to Nizamiye Hospital for their continued partnership, pledging to strengthen the long-standing relationship between the union and the hospital.

The outreach featured health talks, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, hepatitis screening, oral health care, and consultations with medical professionals, underscoring the importance of preventive healthcare among media practitioners who often work under pressure.

This year’s Press Week, themed “Journalism in a Changing World: Media, Press Freedom, Democracy, and Society,” commenced on Friday with special prayers at the NASFAT Juma’at Mosque in Utako. Activities continue with a fitness road walk and a public lecture scheduled for Tuesday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

The Abuja NUJ Press Week aims to celebrate journalism while addressing the personal well-being of media workers, recognizing their indispensable role in sustaining democracy and informing society.
