Her Excellency, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, First Lady of Zamfara State, has been appointed National Secretary of the First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) initiative — a coalition of Nigerian First Ladies leading efforts to combat cancer through advocacy, policy reform, and direct community intervention.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued by Rabi’atu Yusuf, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady of Zamfara State, who described it as a recognition of Hajiya Huriyya’s remarkable contributions to healthcare development, especially in cancer awareness, prevention, and care within Zamfara State and across Nigeria.
In her new national capacity, the Zamfara First Lady is expected to work closely with other First Ladies to intensify advocacy and mobilize resources to strengthen cancer care systems, particularly in underserved communities.
Her appointment follows the recent FLAC Cancer Support Donation Ceremony held at the Imo State House, Asokoro, Abuja, where the coalition discussed strategies to enhance survivor support services and promote early detection campaigns nationwide.
Known for her tireless commitment to accessible and equitable healthcare, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal has spearheaded several impactful initiatives in Zamfara, including free breast cancer screenings, public awareness campaigns, and full sponsorship of surgeries for over 100 cancer patients. Notably, she personally donated ₦3.5 million to support the treatment of indigent cancer patients in the state.
Her elevation to the FLAC national executive is expected to bring renewed energy to the coalition’s national outreach, with a focus on inclusive healthcare policies, community-based interventions, and survivor-centered care. It also signifies a stronger representation of Northern Nigeria in the national cancer advocacy space.
The Abuja donation ceremony saw financial support presented to leading cancer advocacy groups, including the Network of People Impacted by Cancer in Nigeria (NePICiN) and the Health & Psychological Trust Center, reflecting FLAC’s commitment to improving the lives of cancer patients and survivors.
FLAC Chairperson and First Lady of Imo State, Her Excellency Barrister Chioma Hope Uzodimma, described the initiative as “a profound investment in life, dignity, and health equity.” She was joined by other prominent First Ladies, including H.E. Lami Ahmadu Fintiri (Vice Chairperson), H.E. Dr. Linda Ayade, H.E. Monica Ugwuanyi, H.E. Hajiya Zainab Nasir Idris, H.E. Agyin Kefas, and the newly appointed Secretary, H.E. Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal.
Observers say this appointment further solidifies Hajiya Huriyya Lawal’s growing reputation as a champion of public health and women-led development in Zamfara and beyond.
