The Agriculture Graduates Association of Nigeria (AGAN) has organised a sensitisation and awareness workshop for farmers in Garu, a community in Kudan Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The event, aimed at enhancing agricultural practices and productivity, began with a visit to a rice demonstration farm. Community leaders, including traditional rulers and ward heads, joined representatives from various media outlets to witness the opening activities, which commenced with prayers.
Leading the sensitisation program, Comrade Umar Abdullahi, AGAN’s coordinator for Kaduna State, introduced Professor Adamu Yakubu of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, who delivered a lecture on the importance of goal setting and knowledge acquisition before engaging in farming.
Professor Yakubu emphasised the need for farmers to seek expert advice before selecting seeds or applying fertilisers. He warned against the indiscriminate use of animal manure, noting that it may introduce harmful weeds to crops. He encouraged farmers to regularly consult agricultural extension workers for informed guidance.
The professor also stressed the importance of understanding the scale and purpose of one’s farming—whether for commercial or subsistence purposes—to enable better planning and resource management.
In his remarks, Comrade Umar Abdullahi commended AGAN’s extension officers for their dedication to farmer education. He reiterated the association’s commitment to improving rice production, particularly in Kaduna and Niger States, and ultimately across the country.
He urged local farmers to engage actively with AGAN representatives in their areas to access reliable information and professional support.
Malam Abdulkarim Mikailu, owner of the rice demonstration farm used for the workshop, praised AGAN for its continued support, declaring his farm the most successful in Garu.
One of the trainees, Malama Fatima Adamu Mu’azu of Kwakwaren Manu, Sabon Gari LGA, expressed appreciation for the training, noting its positive impact on farmers' awareness and practices.
Also speaking at the event, Malam Abdulrahman Usman, representative of the Sarkin Garu (traditional ruler), conveyed goodwill messages and urged the local community to support AGAN and the trained participants.
The event concluded peacefully and was deemed a success by both organisers and participants.
