Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party’s founding ideals.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it afforded him, including his tenure as Vice President (1999-2007) and two presidential candidacies.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku wrote.

He explained that his decision to leave was driven by concerns over the current trajectory of the party, which he believes has shifted away from its foundational principles.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” he stated.

Atiku concluded by wishing the PDP and its leadership success in their future endeavours while thanking them for their past support.

The letter was acknowledged and received by party officials on July 14, 2025.
