The Kwara State Government has taken a major step towards improving environmental sustainability with the launch of 70 large-size roll-on roll-off (RoRo) bins and five modern waste disposal trucks.
Procured under the World Bank-supported Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, the equipment aims to enhance institutional capacity and promote cleaner, greener communities across the state.
The launch event was held on Friday at the Ministry of Environment office in GRA, Ilorin. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Commissioner for Environment and Chairperson of the State Steering Committee for ACReSAL, Hajia Nafisat Musa-Buge, flagged off the deployment.
The governor said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to a healthier and more sustainable Kwara, emphasizing the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the longevity of the equipment.
“I congratulate everyone for witnessing this milestone. We will continue to improve waste management systems in the state,” he said.
He announced that the Ministry of Environment will immediately deploy the trucks—comprising three dynos and two compactor trucks—and the RoRo bins to strategic communities across the state.
In her remarks, Hajia Musa-Buge commended Governor AbdulRazaq for embracing the ACReSAL initiative and approving the procurement of the waste management equipment. She noted that institutional strengthening is a core component of the project.
“With this addition of RoRo bins and trucks, the capacity of the Ministry of Environment has been significantly enhanced,” she stated.
Hajia Musa-Buge also highlighted other ACReSAL-supported efforts, including the recent distribution of tractors and farm inputs to farmers and the comprehensive renovation of five waterworks across the state. She urged residents to take greater responsibility in waste disposal, stressing that environmental protection is a collective duty.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Ayinla Abubakar, praised the governor for his unwavering commitment to a cleaner and safer environment. He recalled that Ilorin was recently ranked fourth among Nigerian cities with the best environmental standards in a StatiSense analysis and expressed hope of attaining the top spot.
The launch was attended by several senior government officials, including the General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), Mr. Jide Aina; Senior Special Assistant on Environmental Protection, Hon. Muazu Muhammed; SSA on Grassroots Sensitization, Hon. Isiaka Yakubu Agodi; directors from the Ministry of Environment; and other stakeholders.
The State Project Coordinator of Kwara ACReSAL, Alhaji Shamsideen Aregbe, led members of the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) to the event. He thanked Governor AbdulRazaq for his continued support and noted that the inclusion of waste compactor trucks and RoRo bins in the project’s work plan was a strategic decision to bolster the state’s environmental management efforts.
Other speakers, including the GM of KWEPA and the special assistants, commended the governor's visionary leadership and called for the proper use and handling of the new equipment by both staff and residents.
