The Niger State Government has inaugurated a 15-member committee to oversee the resettlement of displaced pastoralist communities in the Kaliko Forest Reserve, located in Wushishi Local Government Area.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Minna, where Alhaji Abubakar Usman, the SSG, outlined the committee’s responsibilities. He emphasized the need for a resettlement process that safeguards the cultural identity, traditions, and livelihoods of the affected communities.

According to Alhaji Usman, the committee is tasked with assessing the current living conditions and needs of the displaced families, designing an inclusive resettlement plan tailored to the Kaliko Forest area, and providing regular progress updates to ensure transparency and accountability.

He directed the committee to commence work immediately and complete its assignment within two months, adding that the timeline could be extended depending on progress and government directives.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee and Commissioner for Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs, Hon. Umar Sanda Rebe (popularly known as Janwuron Minna), expressed appreciation to the state government for the trust placed in them. He described the initiative as a crucial step toward promoting peaceful coexistence, enhancing pastoral livelihoods, and ensuring long-term stability in rural areas.

Hon. Rebe also reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to delivering a fair and sustainable resettlement plan that respects the rights and values of the communities involved, in line with the government’s broader development objectives.

The committee comprises representatives from key government agencies, traditional institutions, and pastoralist leadership, ensuring broad participation and shared ownership of the process.

The Niger State Government reiterated its commitment to peacebuilding and sustainable development, emphasizing continued support for both farming and pastoral populations across the state.
