Lagos, Nigeria – The defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc in the Southwest has formally endorsed Senator Tanko Al-Makura for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing his candidacy as both appropriate and timely—a "round peg in a round hole."
After extended deliberations and concerted efforts to ensure grassroots voices within the bloc were adequately represented, Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmen from each of the Southwest states, led by their respective leaders and coordinated by Prince Lanre Rufai of Lagos State, met this week to unanimously declare their support for Al-Makura’s candidacy.
Hon. Sunday Ajayi, Chairman of the bloc in Ekiti State, and Hon. Gbade Adunola, Chairman in Osun State, expressed satisfaction with the consensus process, describing the outcome as a welcome development and a victory for inclusivity.
They praised Prince Rufai for his mature and democratic leadership throughout the process, noting his willingness to defer to the grassroots decision despite his influence within the bloc.
According to the bloc, the endorsement of Al-Makura marks a turning point—viewed as "sunshine" for the bloc and a potential blessing for the APC, especially ahead of the fiercely competitive 2027 general elections.
During the meeting, all the state chairmen took turns to lament what they described as the neglect of the CPC bloc by the APC and the Federal Government, a situation they say has discouraged many loyal members.
They believe Senator Al-Makura—a respected lawmaker, two-term former Governor of Nasarawa State, and the first and only CPC governor elected in 2011—has the experience, temperament, and credibility needed to lead the APC at this critical time.
In his closing remarks, Prince Rufai said: "Senator Al-Makura seems to possess a magic wand when it comes to winning. His leadership will not only reunite the bloc but will also inspire renewed confidence and direction for the party."
The Southwest CPC bloc now awaits the party’s formal response, expressing hope that the endorsement will be embraced as a step towards inclusivity and internal reconciliation within the APC.
