UN Women Nigeria, in collaboration with the Niger State Commodity and Export Promotion Agency (NSCEPA), has provided relief support to over 2,000 flood-affected residents in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Director General of NSCEPA, Mrs. Fatimah Ndayako, said the intervention aligns with the commitment of the Niger State Government, led by Governor Umar Mohammed Bago, to build a new Niger State by supporting livelihoods and fostering national development.
She explained that the partnership was established to demonstrate compassion and empathy for flood victims, particularly women and children, who have been most vulnerable in the aftermath of the disaster.
According to Mrs. Ndayako, over 2,000 families received food items and basic necessities. She added that the special resilience kits distributed included mats and blankets to protect recipients from cold-related illnesses. Additional essential items targeted at women and girls were also distributed.
“We also offered advice on personal protection, hygiene, and the importance of avoiding overcrowded public places to prevent the spread of diseases,” she noted.
Mrs. Ndayako emphasized the need for long-term livelihood recovery and shelter support for those affected, stressing that the scale of need far exceeds available resources. She called on other stakeholders to join hands in rebuilding the lives and livelihoods of the affected families.
She urged the victims to remain hopeful and resilient, assuring them of continued support in restoring normalcy to their lives.
Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the Mokwa flooding led to significant loss of lives and destruction of property.
