Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has joined well-wishers across the country in celebrating Nigeria’s former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, on the occasion of his 84th birthday.

In a letter of felicitation signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, the university conveyed warm congratulations on behalf of its Senate, Management, Staff, and Students, describing the former leader as “a symbol of enduring values and national unity.”

General Babangida, fondly referred to as IBB, marked his 84th birthday on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The Vice-Chancellor praised the elder statesman not only for the milestone of age but also for a life dedicated to public service and national cohesion.

“We are immensely proud to celebrate you—not only for the grace of years you have attained but also for the enduring values you embody,” the letter read.

Prof. Ahmed also recalled that General Babangida is a recipient of ABU’s Honorary Doctorate Degree (LL.D), which was conferred upon him on 24th November, 2012, in recognition of his contributions to national development and leadership.

Highlighting the former president’s legacy, the Vice-Chancellor noted, “Your life has been defined by strength of character, unwavering belief in the unity of Nigeria, and a commitment to service that continues to inspire generations.”

“At 84, you stand as a living testimony that age should not be a deterrent to one’s continued contributions to the progress and development of our nation,” he added.

Prof. Ahmed concluded by praying for continued good health, renewed strength, and a long life for the elder statesman, expressing hope that his wisdom and counsel would remain guiding lights in Nigeria’s ongoing quest for peace and development.
