Human rights activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore has been released from what he described as “unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention” by the Nigeria Police Force.

Sowore, who made the announcement via his verified social media handle on Friday, credited his release to pressure mounted by supporters and the broader revolutionary movement.

“The Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal & unwarranted detention,” he stated. “However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up! #RevolutionNow.”

The activist was reportedly arrested and detained under controversial circumstances earlier this week, sparking outrage among civil society groups, human rights advocates, and international observers.

While the circumstances surrounding his arrest remain under scrutiny, Sowore’s release has been welcomed by rights organisations, many of whom described his detention as a violation of fundamental freedoms, including the right to protest and freedom of expression.

As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding his detention or release.

Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has faced multiple arrests and legal battles in recent years, often linked to his vocal opposition to government policies and demands for systemic reform.
