Dangote Cement Plc has called on stakeholders in the housing industry to embrace budget-friendly mass housing schemes as a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s housing deficit.

Speaking at the ongoing Africa International Housing Show in Abuja, the company’s National Sales Director, Dolapo Alli, emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration—government agencies, private developers, non-profits, and communities—in delivering affordable homes for Nigerians.

“All sectors must work together. The government, for instance, can adopt public-private partnerships (PPPs) to support mass housing initiatives. Through PPP models, the government may initiate the construction of new estates, while companies in the building and construction sector can be granted tax waivers and credits to ease financing,” Alli said during Dangote Cement’s Special Day at the event.

He explained that mass housing remains a proven strategy for addressing housing shortages and mitigating the pressures of rapid urbanisation, citing its success in several countries. While commending the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, he noted that significant gaps still exist.

“Nigeria has taken commendable steps toward improving access to affordable housing finance, particularly for low- and middle-income earners,” he said. “However, given the scale of the housing deficit—estimated in the millions—there is still a pressing need for greater collaboration across public and private sectors. This includes unlocking innovative financing, streamlining regulations, and scaling up delivery.”

Alli identified several obstacles hindering the delivery of affordable housing in the country. These include rapid urbanization, population growth, high land acquisition costs, the rising prices of construction materials, inadequate basic infrastructure, limited access to long-term and low-cost financing, and inaccurate housing data.

He said Dangote Cement’s continued participation in the Africa International Housing Show is driven by its belief in the event’s ability to generate innovative ideas and build partnerships that advance affordable housing solutions.

He also urged governments at all levels to implement effective housing policies and make land readily available for mass housing projects.

Dangote Cement Plc is one of the sponsors of the Africa International Housing Show, which is scheduled to close on Friday, August 1, 2025.
