It was a historic day at Bayero University, Kano (BUK) on Monday, 18th August, 2025, as Professor Haruna Musa officially assumed duty as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the institution, succeeding Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas. The colourful handing-over ceremony, attended by members of the University community and stakeholders, marked a new chapter in the life of BUK.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Musa pledged to reposition Bayero University as one of Nigeria’s top-ranking universities and a globally recognized centre of excellence. He unveiled his vision anchored on what he described as the “Quadruple I Motto” — Integrity, Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact.
“Our mission is to transform BUK into a world-class institution through visionary leadership, innovative funding, and effective stakeholder engagement. I pledge to pursue this vision with commitment and to uphold the values that define our great institution,” he said.
Prof. Musa expressed deep gratitude to his family, colleagues, and mentors who supported him throughout his academic journey. He paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Prof. Abbas, for his mentorship and for appointing him as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics).
“Prof. Abbas has left indelible footprints in the history of BUK. His tenure is a source of inspiration, and I urge the University community to join hands with me as we move this institution to greater heights,” he added.
Earlier, while presenting his handing-over notes, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Abbas, congratulated Prof. Musa and described his emergence as a product of a transparent and seamless process that many institutions now look up to.
Prof. Abbas reflected on his tenure, recalling that he assumed office during turbulent times marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and prolonged industrial actions, which disrupted nearly two years of his administration. Despite these challenges, he said, his team recorded significant achievements.
He highlighted milestones such as BUK emerging as the best Nigerian university in terms of international visibility and ranking 4th overall in the country. He further revealed that his administration successfully implemented 98% of the University’s 2020–2025 Strategic Plan, covering academic development, research, innovation, partnerships, infrastructure, digital transformation, and financial management.
Prof. Abbas also recounted the landmark resolution of the decades-long land dispute between BUK and the Rimin Zakara community through the intervention of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He further listed several welfare initiatives introduced for staff and students and appealed to the new VC to sustain them.
Expressing gratitude, Prof. Abbas acknowledged individuals and partners who supported BUK during his tenure, including Hon. Abubakar Bichi, who facilitated the release of N3 billion for fencing the entire university; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf; former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; businessman Alhaji A.A. Rano; and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), among others.
In his welcome address, the Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, described the event as a symbolic transfer of leadership and charged both staff and students to rally behind the new Vice-Chancellor to ensure continuity and progress.
The ceremony ended with a rousing ovation as Prof. Musa formally took over the reins of leadership, setting the tone for a future driven by innovation, inclusivity, and impact.
