The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 69,376 Nigerians pre-registered online within the first seven hours of launching its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
According to a press release issued by the Commission on Monday, August 18, the online registration portal went live at 8:30am, and by 3:30pm, tens of thousands had already used the platform to begin the voter registration process.
Out of the total pre-registrants, 33,803 (48.7%) are male, while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. INEC also revealed that young Nigerians aged 18 to 34 constitute the majority of the registrants, numbering 48,033, which represents 69.2% of the total figure.
The voter registration portal — https://cvr.inecnigeria.org — remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering Nigerians a convenient way to register to vote ahead of future elections.
INEC also announced that the in-person registration will begin on Monday, August 25, 2025, at all 811 State and Local Government Area offices nationwide. Registration will be conducted weekdays from 9:00am to 3:00pm, allowing new registrants to register physically and enabling online pre-registrants to complete their biometric capture.
“The two options will proceed simultaneously throughout the duration of the CVR as indicated in the schedule earlier released by the Commission,” said Sam Olumekun, mni, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.
INEC has pledged to provide weekly updates on the CVR process, including detailed breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability status.
Mr. Olumekun also stressed that voter registration is exclusively for Nigerian citizens who are at least 18 years old and have not previously registered. He warned that double or multiple registration is illegal, though added that the CVR will accommodate inter-State or intra-State transfers as well as replacement of lost or damaged voter cards.
INEC urged the public to take advantage of both the online and physical registration options, emphasizing its commitment to an inclusive, transparent, and accessible electoral process.
