Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has called on adherents of the two major religions in the state to embrace tolerance and peaceful coexistence, stressing that such values remain the surest path to lasting peace and harmony.

The governor gave the charge on Sunday in Minna, while speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the 114th Anniversary Thanksgiving, Reunion, and Re-dedication Ceremony of the First Baptist Church, Minna.

Represented by the Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Mrs. Afiniki Eunice Dauda, Bago reiterated his administration’s commitment to fairness and justice for all citizens, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation, under his “New Niger Agenda.”

He noted that no limit exists to the progress Niger State can achieve if Muslims and Christians continue to live together peacefully. He further assured the Christian community that his administration recognizes Niger as a secular state, where both faiths will enjoy equal opportunities.

Bago disclosed that the decision to reintroduce the teaching of Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) in public schools was informed by the need to give equal recognition to all religions.

Congratulating the First Baptist Church on its 114th anniversary, the governor commended its role in promoting moral values, education, community service, and national development. He described the church, founded on August 8, 1911, by railway workers, as “a beacon of light and hope to many,” and urged its members to continue fostering interfaith harmony through love, honesty, and service to humanity.

In his remarks, the Presiding Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Odadeyi, said the church has lived up to its mission since inception, not only serving spiritual purposes but also contributing to education, nation-building, and moral upbringing. He commended Governor Bago for giving Christians in the state “a sense of belonging” and used the occasion to announce the church’s endorsement of the governor for a second term in 2027, citing his competence and leadership capacity.

Similarly, the Christian Youths Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Christian Youths in Politics (Niger State Chapter) also endorsed Bago, describing his relationship with the Christian community as exemplary.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, and the Coordinator of Christian Affairs, Lawrence Mohammed Isa, in separate remarks, applauded Bago’s achievements across various sectors and urged Christians to sustain their support for his administration.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of an Outstanding Leadership Award to the governor in recognition of his commitment to fostering unity and his support for Christians in the state.
