The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of an illegal Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mokwa town, following public complaints about its potential threat to community safety and security.

Announcing the decision on behalf of the State Government, the Executive Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Hon. (Amb.) Jibril Abdullahi Muregi (Dan Ajiyan Nupe), disclosed that investigations revealed the camp’s occupants were not victims of the May 29th flood disaster as claimed by its operators. He added that the camp was established without the necessary approval from relevant authorities.

The announcement was made during an expanded security meeting held at the Mokwa Local Government Secretariat. The meeting was attended by traditional rulers including the Ndalile of Mokwa, Etsuyankpa Ndayako, and the Sarkin Hausawa of Mokwa, as well as heads of security agencies, local government executives, and legislators.

Local community leaders welcomed the decision, describing it as timely and necessary for preserving peace and order in the area.

Hon. Muregi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with the State Government, traditional institutions, and security agencies to maintain lasting peace in Mokwa and its surroundings.
