Engr. Prof. Taiye Elisha Adejumo of the Department of Civil Engineering has urged stakeholders in the construction industry to avoid sharp practices that compromise the safety and sustainability of civil infrastructure.

Prof. Adejumo made this call while delivering the 117th Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the University Auditorium, Main Campus, Gidan Kwano.

In the lecture titled “The Role of Geotechnical Engineers in the Stability and Sustainability of Civil Infrastructure in a Growing Economy,” the renowned academic emphasized the importance of proper site investigations and the engagement of qualified geotechnical engineers and foundation specialists in all civil engineering projects.

He walked the audience through key areas including the definition and scope of geotechnical engineering, its significance in modern infrastructure, challenges of infrastructure development in Nigeria, soil conditions across the country, foundation design and construction, and methods of subsoil classification.

Prof. Adejumo noted that geotechnical investigation and sound foundation design are essential for ensuring structural safety, cost efficiency, long-term durability, and environmental sustainability.

He also advocated for environmentally responsible construction practices, stressing that the stability and performance of infrastructure are closely linked to geotechnical assessments.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, described Prof. Adejumo — who was the institution’s best graduating student in 1998 — as a dependable and sincere scholar whose academic journey continues to inspire.

The event featured the presentation of a university memento to Prof. Adejumo and his family in appreciation of his scholarly contributions. Various groups within and outside the university also presented gifts to honor the occasion.
