...Expected to Drive Reforms Anchored on Global Best Practices
Prof. Oluyinka Oluseyi Okubanjo will formally assume office as the new Provost of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Postgraduate College on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
A former Deputy Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies—now known as the Postgraduate College—Prof. Okubanjo also teaches at the Department of Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology. He previously served as Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
His appointment, approved last week by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, follows the expiration of the tenure of Prof. Muhammad Nasiru Shuaibu. The new appointment is for a period of two years.
Prof. Okubanjo is expected to institute far-reaching reforms aligned with the vision and mission of Ahmadu Bello University and reflective of global best practices in postgraduate education, administration, and academic governance.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on Monday, August 18, 2025.
The new Provost is also tasked with positioning the university as a leader in Transnational Education by developing frameworks and protocols for establishing international partnerships in postgraduate training and research.
In addition, he is expected to design and coordinate postgraduate programmes that enhance the effective domestication of TETFund-supported scholar training across the 14 disciplines assigned to ABU.
Expanding access to postgraduate education is also central to his mandate. He is expected to champion flexible, inclusive, and technology-driven models—including hybrid and online programmes.
Furthermore, Prof. Okubanjo is charged with promoting institutional visibility and engagement, making the College a catalyst for national development, academic excellence, and international leadership.
His appointment comes at a critical time when the Federal Government has entrusted Ahmadu Bello University with the responsibility of implementing the TETFund Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) scheme—a mandate that underscores government confidence in the university’s institutional capacity.
ABU has also recently been challenged to spearhead Transnational Education (TNE) partnerships, opening opportunities for dual degree programmes, joint supervision, faculty exchange, and international research collaboration.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Okubanjo’s appointment was based on his deep familiarity with the College—having served as a former Deputy Dean—as well as his reputation as a seasoned researcher and respected academic reformer.
