President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, for their outstanding performance at the ongoing AfroBasket Women’s Championship, praising their discipline, focus, and unity.

In a statement shared via his official social media platform on Saturday, President Tinubu lauded the team’s resilience and the pride they have brought to the nation through their performance.

“I salute the incredible discipline, focus, and team spirit of D’Tigress at this year’s AfroBasket tournament,” the President stated. “They have not only carried our flag high but earned global respect for Nigerian excellence, our players and team officials.”

Tinubu gave special recognition to Coach Rena Wakama, the team’s head coach and the first woman to lead the national side. He described her leadership as a source of inspiration for the team and the country.

“A special commendation to Coach Rena Wakama, our first female Head Coach, whose leadership and experience—both on the court and now from the bench—continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” he said.

D’Tigress are on a quest for their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title—a feat that would further cement their dominance in African women’s basketball. The President expressed full confidence in the team, adding that the entire nation stands firmly behind them.

“The entire nation is behind you as you go for the 5th straight title. #MissionV,” Tinubu affirmed.

D’Tigress are scheduled to play in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Kigali, Rwanda, as they aim to make history with another championship win.
