The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) has successfully executed 20 capital projects and implemented a series of interventions aimed at advancing girls’ education in Zamfara State.

The State Coordinator of AGILE, Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdu Gusau, disclosed this while presenting the fact sheet for activities carried out between August 2024 and July 2025 during the annual media roundtable held in Gusau on Sunday. She noted that although the project began operations in Zamfara later than in other states, it has recorded significant progress in improving learning quality and boosting school enrollment, especially among adolescent girls.

She revealed that within the review period, the programme facilitated the distribution of over 340,000 teaching and learning materials, provided nearly 10,000 three-seater classroom furniture, constructed 115 boreholes, renovated 590 classrooms, and built 185 modern toilets. In addition, over 8,000 adolescent girls benefited from conditional cash transfers, while 180 personnel were sensitized and trained on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention. The programme also renovated 38 women’s vocational centres and equipped 20 of them with tools and materials for livelihood skills training.

AGILE reached more than 6,000 communities through sensitization and engagement with traditional and religious leaders, while 32 media outreach programmes were implemented, reaching a cumulative audience of over 1.4 million online viewers. It also procured and distributed 100 sets of safety kits, trained 60 master trainers on life skills, and established safe spaces in 150 schools where 396 mothers are being mentored.

Through a back-to-school campaign, the programme mobilized and enrolled 571 girls in communities such as Shabonke, Sabongida, and Rawaya in Gusau Local Government Area. Additionally, 103 computer teachers from secondary schools were trained, and 1,100 desktop computers, 50 projectors, and 50 projector boards were distributed to enhance digital learning.

Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) feedback boxes were also distributed to 174 schools, while eco-clubs were established in the same number of project-focused schools. The programme further supported the Zamfara State Education Management Information System (EMIS) in conducting the annual school census.

In his remarks, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Malam Wadatau Madawaki, commended AGILE’s efforts, stating that the initiative is one of the achievements Governor Dauda Lawal is most proud of. Represented by the Social Protection Officer, Ibrahim Muhammad, the commissioner described AGILE’s impact within a short time as tremendous.

He emphasized that the media play a vital role as key stakeholders in shaping public opinion and ensuring the success of girl-child education in the state. He further noted that journalists remain an essential voice in highlighting achievements and drawing attention to challenges within the education sector.
