The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has recovered alleged wiretapping equipment said to be capable of intercepting conversations and sensitive security documents from the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.

The commission said the suspected items were retrieved in the presence of the former governor’s wife, Hadiza El-Rufai, and his son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, during a search operation conducted at the residence.

The agency also alleged that the former governor declined to cooperate with investigators and chose to remain silent until he is brought before a court. It further claimed that an aide linked to the investigation had fled the country.

The anti-graft agency made the allegations in court processes filed in response to El-Rufai’s application seeking redress and release from detention.

The commission stated that it had obtained a remand order from a Magistrate Court in Bwari in the Federal Capital Territory to detain the former governor for 14 days, an order scheduled to expire on Thursday.

The commission denied allegations of arbitrary detention and repression, urging the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory to dismiss El-Rufai’s application alleging violation of his fundamental human rights.

The ICPC also said the former governor has several corruption-related allegations to answer, including inquiries into the whereabouts of €1.4 million; 180 suspicious payments totalling ₦2,158,799,199 from a Consolidated Revenue Account linked to Kaduna State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) account; and transfers to undisclosed accounts amounting to ₦428,122,180.18, among others.
