…Calls for Collective Support to Combat Disease
By Abdullahi Idris, Bauchi
The Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau, has inaugurated the state’s Cholera Steering and Technical Committees, urging members to approach their responsibilities with professionalism, commitment, and a sense of urgency.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Bauchi, the Deputy Governor — who also chairs the Steering Committee — expressed concern over the recurring cholera outbreaks in the state, which continue to claim lives, disrupt livelihoods, and place immense pressure on the state’s health infrastructure.
“Cholera remains one of the leading public health threats in our state despite significant efforts by the government and its partners,” he said. “The establishment of these committees is not only timely but essential to achieving our health objectives.”
Jatau stressed that cholera outbreaks are largely preventable through timely interventions, coordinated responses, and sustained investments in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.
“These committees are expected to serve as central coordinating bodies for Bauchi State’s multi-sectoral response to cholera outbreaks,” he explained. “They will also be instrumental in driving long-term prevention strategies in line with the National Cholera Control Plan and the broader goals of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).”
He described the appointment of members to the committees as a reflection of their expertise and strategic importance, expressing confidence in their ability to ensure effective surveillance, early detection, and rapid response to cholera outbreaks.
The Deputy Governor also reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration to providing the necessary support and conducive environment for successful programme implementation.
In his remarks, Dr. Sani Mohammed Dambam, the State Commissioner for Health and Chairman of the Technical Committee, pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to achieve the committee’s mandate.
“We are committed to a coordinated and sustained response to prevent future cholera outbreaks and protect the health of our citizens,” he said.
The inauguration marks a renewed push by the Bauchi State Government to strengthen its public health response framework and enhance preparedness for potential disease outbreaks.
