The Arewa Youth Congress (AYC), a coalition of progressive young leaders from the 19 Northern states, has conferred its prestigious Arewa Patriotic Merit Award on Dr. Shehu Sambo, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency.
Dr. Sambo was honoured with the title of "Arewa Icon of Healthcare Leadership and Youth Empowerment", following his official nomination and approval during the Arewa Youth Empowerment and Economic Summit (AYEES) 2025, held at the historic Arewa House in Kaduna.
The award presentation took place in Jigawa State, where AYC leadership, led by its Speaker Ambassador Hassan Mohammed Sadau, formally decorated Dr. Sambo in recognition of his outstanding contributions to healthcare development, humanitarian service, and youth empowerment.
In his citation, Ambassador Sadau commended Dr. Sambo’s transformative leadership, which has led to a significant increase in immunisation coverage, revitalisation of primary healthcare facilities, and the deployment of community health ambassadors—bringing essential medical services closer to underserved rural communities.
Beyond his public health initiatives, Dr. Sambo has also championed youth empowerment through job creation and capacity-building programmes, offering young people hope, dignity, and purpose.
The AYC further extended its gratitude to the Governor of Jigawa State, His Excellency Umar Namadi, for appointing Dr. Sambo to such a strategic position. A vote of confidence was also passed on Dr. Sambo’s leadership, describing it as exemplary and impactful.
Speaking on behalf of AYC’s millions of members—popularly known as Majalisar Matasan Arewa—Ambassador Sadau congratulated Dr. Sambo on the well-deserved honour and encouraged him to remain steadfast in his selfless service to humanity.
