The Federal Government has officially released a revised national school curriculum, which will take effect from September 2025, introducing major reforms at both Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) levels.

The announcement was made by the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he shared a detailed breakdown of the new subject structure for both tiers of secondary education.

The new curriculum places strong emphasis on digital literacy, entrepreneurship, programming, and artificial intelligence, in a bid to align Nigeria’s education system with global trends and equip students with skills relevant to the modern economy.

Junior Secondary School (JSS 1–3) Subjects:

  • Mathematics & Measurement: Numbers, fractions, percentages, algebra, geometry, statistics, graphs, and units of measurement.

  • English Language: Essay writing, advanced grammar, comprehension, vocabulary development, and oral presentation skills.

  • Integrated Science: Foundations in physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and laboratory safety.

  • Digital Literacy & Coding: Practical knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, basic coding (Python, Scratch), and introductory robotics.

  • Social Studies: Nigerian and African history, geography, civics, trade, and basic entrepreneurship.

  • Languages: Study of the mother tongue and conversational fluency in either French or Arabic.

  • Creative Arts: Exposure to drawing, painting, crafts, theatre, music, and basic film appreciation.

  • Physical & Health Education: Sports, fitness, nutrition, reproductive health, and first aid.

Senior Secondary School (SS 1–3) Subjects:

  • Mathematics & Advanced Applications: Algebra, trigonometry, basic calculus, probability, statistics, and financial mathematics.

  • English & Communication: Advanced essay writing, research methodology, literary analysis, journalism, and fact-checking.

  • Sciences: In-depth studies in physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, and environmental science.

  • Technology & Innovation: Programming in Python, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS; AI and robotics; cybersecurity; and digital entrepreneurship.

  • Social Sciences: Government, law, economics, history, philosophy, and ethics.

  • Languages: Advanced study of local language literature and fluency in French, Arabic, or Chinese.

  • Creative Arts & Innovation: Fine arts, music, drama, and film/media production.

  • Physical & Health Education: Advanced sports training, mental health awareness, CPR, and leadership development.

  • Research & Project Work: Students will undertake a final-year project involving data analysis, presentation, and defense.

Positive Reception from Education Stakeholders

Education stakeholders have commended the updated curriculum, describing it as a progressive step toward preparing Nigerian students for the demands of a rapidly evolving, technology-driven global economy. They noted that the integration of coding, AI, and entrepreneurship into mainstream education marks a turning point in Nigeria’s educational strategy.

The Federal Ministry of Education is expected to begin nationwide sensitisation and training programs to ensure seamless implementation of the new curriculum across all states.
