The Fulani herdsmen community has been urged to continue supporting the administration of Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago in its efforts to promote peace and lay the foundation for a renewed Niger State.
The call was made by Alhaji Shehu Jita, Director of Programmes for the Fulani Youth Sai Bago Again group, during a media interaction on the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter registration exercise. The registration targets eligible voters who have recently reached voting age or relocated and are yet to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Alhaji Shehu praised the administration’s unprecedented support for the Fulani community, noting that Governor Bago had demonstrated exceptional commitment to their welfare.
“Governor Bago has hosted us, supported us, and given us a feast. It is our duty to reciprocate his generosity,” he said. “In the history of this country, no state government has shown Fulani herdsmen the level of respect and inclusion that we are witnessing under Dr. Umaru Bago.”
He highlighted several initiatives taken by the administration, including the creation of the Ministry of Pastoral Affairs, appointment of Fulani individuals into political positions, and provision of employment opportunities for members of the community.
“These are things we have been demanding for decades — and we have received them within a short period under this administration. We, the Fulani in Niger State, have no complaints,” he added.
Alhaji Shehu emphasised the importance of embracing the government’s initiatives to educate herders and foster peaceful coexistence between herdsmen and other communities. According to him, these efforts are vital for achieving sustainable development, economic growth, and long-lasting peace in Niger State.
Turning his attention to voter registration, he urged Fulani parents and guardians to ensure that every child who has turned 18 registers for a voter card.
“That card is our voice and our power. Through it, we can show our support for Dr. Umaru Bago by voting en masse in the 2027 general elections. That is how we will return the favour he has done for us.”
He also called on Fulani traditional leaders and group heads to set aside differences and unite in support of Governor Bago’s vision.
“This is not the time for division. Let us come together, vote for him, and support the All Progressives Congress (APC) at all levels. That unity will demonstrate our gratitude and ensure continued development and representation for the Fulani community in Niger State,” he concluded.
