The newly established University of Education, Gambia (UEG), has appointed Professor Ahmed Adamu as its pioneer Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Adamu, a distinguished academic from the Department of Agronomy at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, was officially named to the position by the Gambian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, acting on behalf of the country’s President and Chancellor of the university, Adama Barrow.

The announcement, shared via the verified Facebook page of IAR, disclosed that Prof. Adamu’s appointment followed a competitive selection process conducted by the UEG Governing Council, after which he emerged as the successful candidate.

Prof. Ahmed Adamu is widely recognised for his scholarly excellence, leadership in academic circles, and decades-long contributions to agricultural research, higher education, and institutional development.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Gambian government to position the new university as a centre of excellence for teacher education in Africa. His experience and research-driven approach are expected to guide UEG’s vision of becoming a world-class teacher training institution.

The IAR community, in a congratulatory message, described the appointment as a reflection of the institute’s legacy of producing visionary leaders who continue to make significant global contributions in academia and beyond.
