NNPP Dumps Jibrin: ‘He Rode on Kwankwaso’s Back to Power, Now He Thinks He’s a Giant’

In a dramatic twist to Kano’s political saga, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has expelled Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, the House of Representatives member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency, citing alleged anti-party activities and financial delinquency.

The expulsion, announced on Saturday by the Kano State Chairman of the NNPP, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, follows what party leaders describe as repeated betrayals, including public criticisms of the party and its leadership.

“Jibrin is not the political heavyweight he imagines himself to be,” Dungurawa told journalists in Kano. “His victory at the polls was never about his popularity — it was the Kwankwasiyya movement and our party that handed him that win.”

Jibrin, a former ally of APC strongman Bola Tinubu, had hinted just 24 hours earlier that he might exit the NNPP, stating he was “old enough” to decide what’s best for him politically.

But the NNPP beat him to it.

According to Dungurawa, Jibrin was given several opportunities to reconcile with the party after a controversial appearance on Channels Television, where he criticised the NNPP. However, he allegedly doubled down on his stance and intensified his disloyalty.

“Rather than show remorse, he escalated his attacks and openly pledged loyalty to forces outside our party. That was the final straw,” the chairman said.

Dungurawa didn’t stop there. He accused Jibrin of persistently failing to meet his financial obligations to the party, saying legal action would be taken to recover unpaid dues.

“It’s in the constitution — every member must pay their dues. He refused. Now, we will take him to court,” he said.

Amid speculation that Jibrin may return to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dungurawa remained unfazed.

“Let him go. It won’t shake us. Politics is about coalitions, and we have the Kwankwasiyya family firmly behind our leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” he said.

Jibrin has yet to officially respond to the expulsion, but analysts say his next political move could reshape alignments ahead of the 2027 elections — especially in Kano’s high-stakes political theatre.
