The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has joined the St. Jude Global Alliance, a worldwide network of leading hospitals and research centers committed to advancing childhood cancer care and research.

The development follows the signing of a Medical Institution Membership Agreement (MIMA) between ATBUTH and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, United States. The agreement formally admits the Nigerian institution into the St. Jude Global Alliance.

According to a statement issued by the Head of Public Relations and Protocol Unit of ATBUTH, Usman Abdullahi Koli, the partnership marks a significant milestone in the hospital’s commitment to improving the survival rates and quality of life of children suffering from cancer and other life-threatening diseases across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa.

The Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Professor Yusuf Bara Jibrin, described the collaboration as a major stride in the hospital’s pursuit of global excellence in pediatric oncology and medical research. He noted that the partnership aligns with ATBUTH’s vision to deliver world-class care and renewed hope to children and families facing the challenges of childhood cancer.

“This partnership will enhance our research capacity, expand clinical expertise, and align our operations with international best practices,” Professor Jibrin said.

The agreement was also signed by Dr. Kefas John Bwala, Coordinator of the Children Oncology Group and Paediatric Surgeon at the hospital, who expressed optimism that the partnership would mark a new era for pediatric oncology in Bauchi and Nigeria.

Dr. Bwala explained that the collaboration would provide access to global mentorship, standardized treatment protocols, and specialized training opportunities designed to strengthen ATBUTH’s ability to manage childhood cancers more effectively.

The statement added that with this membership, ATBUTH Bauchi joins a select group of institutions in Nigeria affiliated with St. Jude’s global mission to advance cures and prevention of pediatric catastrophic diseases through cutting-edge research, compassionate treatment, and continuous professional development.

Health experts have described the partnership as a boost to Nigeria’s medical sector, noting that it underscores ATBUTH’s growing reputation as a center of excellence in healthcare, research, and innovation within the country and beyond.
