The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as false and misleading, a report by an online platform alleging that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an attempted military coup.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ described the report as malicious and aimed at causing unnecessary tension and distrust among Nigerians. It noted that the parade was cancelled to enable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country, and to allow the Armed Forces sustain momentum in the ongoing fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

The DHQ further clarified that the recent arrest of sixteen officers under investigation had no connection whatsoever with any coup plot, stressing that it was a routine internal process to uphold discipline and professionalism within the military. According to the statement, an investigative panel has already been constituted and its findings will be made public upon conclusion.

Reassuring Nigerians of the military’s loyalty to constitutional governance, the Defence Headquarters urged citizens to disregard what it called “falsehoods being circulated by purveyors of misinformation.” It reaffirmed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to democracy and the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Brigadier General Gusau also called on Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to ensure peace, development, and the wellbeing of the nation, emphasizing that “democracy is forever.”
