The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has distributed 850 units of 13-horsepower hand-driven power tillers, life jackets, and other relief materials across its member states.

Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, flagged off the distribution exercise at the Commission’s headquarters in Minna.

Governor Bago commended the Commission, particularly its Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, for his unwavering dedication to the development of N-HYPPADEC communities. He attributed Yelwa’s recent reappointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to his outstanding performance and leadership.

The governor described the distribution exercise as a clear demonstration of N-HYPPADEC’s commitment to supporting flood-affected communities and strengthening food security in the region. He urged farmers to take advantage of dry-season farming opportunities within the Lower Niger Basin and to embrace pasture cultivation in line with the Federal Government’s agricultural and livestock development initiatives.

Governor Bago reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to continue partnering with N-HYPPADEC for greater impact. He announced plans to provide 160 water pumps to boost agricultural productivity and called on the Commission to include the reticulation of New Bussa and Bida towns, as well as intervention in the Kuta waterworks, in its 2026 budget.

Speaking on recurring boat mishaps in Niger State, the governor expressed concern over the loss of lives and emphasized the need for public sensitization on water safety. “Lives have been lost; our people must be re-educated. We are discussing with the Etsu Nupe and the N-HYPPADEC Managing Director on how to enforce the compulsory use of life jackets,” he said.

In his remarks, N-HYPPADEC Managing Director, Alh. Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, disclosed that Niger State received 165 units of the 850 hand-driven power tillers distributed across member states. He added that other distributed items included 4,000 life jackets, 500 bags of NPK fertilizer, 50 cartons of pesticides, and 100 cartons of herbicides for flood-affected communities in Mokwa and other local government areas.

Yelwa further stated that the Commission recently awarded contracts for the supply of planters and sprayers to enhance agricultural recovery efforts in member states. He described the gesture as part of ongoing measures to reduce vulnerability, improve livelihoods, and promote inclusive development in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Bago’s agricultural vision.

In separate goodwill messages, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Matthew Ahmed, and the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alh. Yahaya Abubakar, commended N-HYPPADEC’s interventions. They noted that the Commission’s programmes align with Governor Bago’s agenda to enhance food security and empower smallholder farmers through mechanized and sustainable agricultural practices across the state.
